WRITER’S BLOCK

Through my writing journey, I have learned about writer’s block. I have had a few people raising this issue of experiencing writer’s block and looking at ways of sorting it out. Initially, I did not know what it meant but now being in the industry I have a great understanding after undertaking some research.

Writer’s block is a situation which can start from having difficulty in coming up with original ideas and to the extreme being unable to produce any commenced work for years.

Have you ever started a project where ideas were flowing freely then everything changes and you stare at a blank page without thinking of anything tangible to put down on that project? If yes this might be a writer’s block where your brains cannot think at that particular time on what to put down as a writer.

However, this writer’s block is measured by time passing without any productivity of the commenced tasks. Many writers in their writing careers have experienced writer’s block at some point.

There are maybe several causes which might cause writer’s block such as;

  1. Losing interest in commenced task or project
  2. Being occupied with other tasks not related to that particular project
  3. Depression
  4. Other diseases which can affect people from their activity of daily living
  5. Family issues such as relationships
  6. Stress among others

Some other contributing factors might be self-doubt and lack of confidence. The writer underestimates their talent in writing and doubts their worthiness. Despite the writer’s capability to produce a good document self-doubts takes hold of their mind and they might just lose the ideas to continue with a project which initially had a good start.

Rejection and negative criticism could also add to the problem of the writer losing interest since they are scared and afraid of being judged negatively. The fear of being judged negatively could come from customers, publishers, colleagues and friends.

What I have come to realise is that we cannot please everyone and for one reason or another, other people will always criticise other people’s work whether positive or negative. If positive then the morale to continue enjoying writing is appreciated and if the criticism is negative that can impact the writer and drive them to experience writer’s block. It is important to note that there will always be some sort of criticism and we have to accept it.

From my short time being a writer, I decided that if I receive negative feedback I will try and learn from it and turn it into a positive to do a better job next time and to improve in my area of weakness.

Sometimes support from outside might be of great help where the writer just needs someone to talk to and provide reassurance.

There are other measures which can help in dealing with writer’s block and these include:

  1. If feeling overwhelmed taking a break from the project and do something totally different
  2. Reach out for support and communicate your problem
  3. Join groups where discussions are not to judge people but to provide support if needed
  4. Provide yourself with goals to achieve what is required. This can be done by creating a timeframe and putting down tasks to be undertaken. Once done ticking them off as completed.
  5. Do not force yourself to write if you have no mood to do it. Postpone to another time.
  6. Allocate dedicated time for writing.
  7. Provide yourself with breaks while writing such as tea or lunch
  8. Pick a phone and call a trusted friend to discuss your issues.
  9. See a doctor if depression is experienced.

We are all different and different people have different mechanisms in dealing with difficult situations. Whatever works for you is important to take on board. Otherwise do not suffer in silence, there is help out there.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block and how did you tackle it out?

ONLINE ADVERSITING

I am a learner and this journey is about publishing a book and learning other things associated with publishing which are never talked about before publishing. This week I am discussing online advertising and my experience on this platform.

I undertook online advertising after realising that I was to do the footwork in selling my book. I can talk directly with people who get interested in buying my book however it is difficult selling online. I looked forward to online advertisement since everyone talks about it and this is my finding.

Amazon ads

There are different types of advertising on Amazon such as brand sponsored, cost per click (CPC) among others. I could not understand how the cost per click meant but at least I have an idea now. After my research, I settled on lock screen advertising. As per my understanding, this advertisement is displayed on customers kindle readers gadgets and when the customer clicks on your ad, they get directed into your book site assuming they might get interested and purchase your book.

I carried this advertisement for almost three weeks and the budget has to be $100 since Amazon does not let you set it less than that. Within three weeks I saw on the report that nothing much had happened with this advertisement and I sold nothing from it. Just before the campaign finished, I discontinued the advertisement.

Facebook ads

My next trial was facebook ads and this was based on cost per click and decided on how much I was willing to spend on this campaign. There are different campaigns on facebook one where you can promote your page and the book and the other where you buy the likes. I chose the promotion of my book. I put a budget of 40 dollars to run over two weeks but different times. The two weeks are five days per week, not seven.

The report showed that there were a lot of people who clicked on the site however it did not drive any sales. After that campaign I decided that companies are making their money through this online marketing but nothing much for the advertisers. Some people might make their money through facebook marketing but it wasn’t for me. I am not planning to run another campaign through facebook.

Its write now

Unlike Amazon and facebook, its write now is a platform build to promote ebooks particularly kindle. They also run free book promotions and low bargain paid ones as well. I gave a paid promotion a trial and even though I never made a sale from that advertisement the site sends a report as to where they have shared your campaign.

Its write now has two paid options $10 for three days and the campaign is posted ten times through their facebook, twitter and Pinterest accounts. For $20 the campaign is posted more than twenty times, runs for seven days and provides advertisements on their three platforms as mentioned above.

Book Bub

BookBub is well regarded in terms of advertising books and since it is highly talked about, I thought I give it a go to see how my book would fare on this platform. There are two types of advertising on bookbub cost per click (CPC) and cost per thousand impressions (CPM).

You pay when a customer clicks on your advertisement on CPC model while in CPM you pay per one thousand advertisement impressions. I chose the former with a budget of $20 to run for a week. On the third day, there were a lot of clicks but after the week lapsed, I never got any sales from the ads.

The advertisement money all adds up however the sales cannot break even. Therefore, I decided I will enjoy writing and putting my work out there for people to read and if I earn something small that is good enough and if not, I will not waste money on advertising without any results. However, the learning is still on and I am still experimenting to see the results. Who would have thought that writing a book comes with a lot of complications? Please share your views.

EVALUATING ADVANCED READERS COPY (ARC)

Every day is a new day for authors and particularly new ones like myself who are learning different ways to make a book exposed out to the world. My first mistake was failure to market the book before publishing and I never gave out books for Advanced Readers Copy either for reviews. Well, I have never heard of ARC before coming to the publishing world and here I am finding out how it works.

After collecting so many views from the internet, one of the recommendations I have found is giving your book for free so that people could read them and provide honest reviews. This process also enables authors to rectify their books and make adjustments before the book goes on sales. The reviews also contribute to selling the book however one should not pay for the reviews since this is corruption and Amazon cracks down hard on dishonest people. I would not even be tempted to pay for the reviews, since cheating never pays.

I am a believer in hard work but this giving books for free does not sit well with me since there is nothing for free in this world. However, in the publishing world, there is no other way one can be identified in their writing apart from giving freebies. Therefore, my journey on providing freebies of my book commenced and this is how I am fairing on.

There are quite a few websites that facilitate ARCs and this includes Booksprout, StoryOrigin, Goodreads and BookFunnel among others. I registered with Booksprout, StoryOrigin and Goodreads.

Booksprout

My non-fiction book was published in the first week of August. In September I became a member of Booksprout and enrolled in their free ARC. Booksprout claims to have quite a few followers and therefore they promise to get your book exposed. I had a link which I used to let people know that my book was free on Booksprout and I got three claims at the time. However, I never got any review from the people who claimed my book.

I decided to give it another go however, Booksprout only allows one free arc and the author has to pay for the next arc on the same book. I have committed to it by paying USD 10 to give my book for free and get exposure. The ten dollars are paid monthly which I started on 3rd November 2020.

I am not intending to pay ten dollars a month, I want to see how many people will claim the book within this month then pull out on the deal. I have shared my link with social media and so far, four days into the deal nobody has claimed my book. I am giving 50 copies to be downloaded and only time will tell.

Goodreads

There is a lot of talk on joining Goodreads and how well this site works to encourage Indie authors to get exposed to their work. I joined Goodreads in late August. The site is not user friendly and it is like a maze trying to figure out how it works. I thought I had a problem with the site but later a few authors were complaining of the same. Once I registered with Goodreads, I disappeared since I got lost with the whole setup. I later revisited the site in September to try and claim my author page. I finally managed to set up my profile and had to wait for two days for the administrator to give the green light. Once up and running the next thing was to put up my book for exposure, at the time unless you paid $119 one could not give freebies.

I did not see the value of putting my money into their system therefore I just left my book there. I checked the site before writing this piece and now Goodreads states that only Americans and Canadians can give away freebies and all other countries are locked out. I cannot still figure out how this Goodreads site works. I understand that Goodreads is part of Amazon however even though you get reviews on this site, those reviews cannot be crossed over to the Amazon site. The exposure and the link to the Amazon sales book site is an advantage in this case.

StoryOrigin

I joined StoryOrigin in late September and it seems to be a newer website service. The site is not straight forward but setting up the author’s page is easy. There is also a place where one can provide freebies without paying a penny. As the owner says, the site is free until he decides on how much he will start charging people.

I did put my book for an exchange with other authors interested in reading books in the same genre. So far, I have done one exchange. The site is still young and growing and does not have a lot of traffic on it. I have also put my book for free from the start of this month and hopefully, people will download the book.

Bookfunnel

I have not registered with BookFunnel site and after researching, I understand that it is a book hosting site. It enables an author to store their book and facilitate freebies to be downloaded easily.

The site does not undertake any promotions for your book, therefore even though you register with them you have to do marketing for people to visit the site and download the freebies. Again, there is no free provision on this site, the cheapest an author can get is a $20 a year subscription which gives you nothing much apart from having a platform to download free books.

In conclusion

After dealing with all these sites and services, non is built towards developing new indie authors. The platforms are there to achieve their objectives in driving more traffic to their sites while they also make money. They have created links for authors to give free books and that is it. Please do not get me wrong the links are great in sending eBooks.

I do not mind paying and putting a lot of my effort into services if I am provided with a report of where these online services have exposed my promos even though it does not generate a lot of response. However, I feel short-changed when I volunteer to pay $10 per month without knowing what that money has done.

I might be wrong on this one but this indie publishing is a hard and long road. Any other views are welcome. Since I enjoy writing and I do not give up easily, I am working on my second book managing money. I am still learning.

TITLE TRANSFER FROM AMAZON TO INGRAMSPARK

As a new author and still learning, I published my only book with Amazon. The excitement to finally publish a book was overwhelming, little did I know there is more to just publishing. Once my book was published, I could not wait to hold a printed version of the book and this is where the reality of printing the book became a nightmare.

I started the journey of getting my book printed by Amazon. I am going to share my experience on how this whole journey went and it might help other new authors on how to deal with such in case they are caught off guard like myself.

I failed to research before I went for self-publishing and I was blind-sided by the excitement of becoming a published author. Before publishing my book, I knew Amazon was available in Australia and everything else was going to be easy but I was wrong.

Publishing with Amazon

Publishing a book with Amazon is easy, if the book is internally well designed the only thing required by Amazon is to put the book into PDF format and follow the prompts provided on their website to upload your manuscript. The e-book is accepted in terms of document version.

Amazon has made it very easy for indie publishers as long as one can follow the steps as articulated on their website. Amazon also has its book designing software which can be used for interior and cover design. I am not familiar with this software since I never used it.

Once I completed the process of uploading the book, my book was LIVE which is an indication that anyone can view and purchase the book and there is no other satisfaction of an author like this achievement. I went to order author books and the price of the printing was a little bit higher since my book had a few coloured pictures.

The postage price to Australia made no sense to me and when I started doing my calculations it was going to cost a lot of money just to get hard copy books on my doorstep. The time it took to order and receive the books was way too long, a month to be precise.

I commenced researching on printing books here in Australia through Amazon. Unfortunately, Amazon does not offer printing in Australia and my dreams were crushed. There was no information on the website which highlighted that Amazon had no printing plant here. Therefore, before publishing your book ensure that Amazon does print books on your location, and if not, they can offer a different pathway for you to print your books.

I had already had a pre-sale of books through friends, colleagues, and potential clients but I could not deliver those books to them with the indicated prices which were offered by Amazon. I ordered very few books to satisfy myself and to examine the quality of printing. I also sold those books without making any profit but to satisfy my clients.

Transfer from Amazon to IngramSpark

After a lot of research and overwhelming information from websites which can be confusing, I decided to get in touch with IngramSpark here in Australia and find out what it takes to transfer my title from Amazon to them. This was going to enable the printing of books easier and a little bit cheaper. The following are the steps I undertook to get my title transferred from Amazon.

• IngramSpark sent out the application form indicating my interest to transfer to their organisation
• Filled up all the forms and returned to IngramSpark
• Wrote to Amazon to request the release of book title to IngramSpark
• The book must be removed from expanded distribution from Amazon to enable the transfer of title
• The e-book must not be enrolled in KDP select program. In case it is enrolled with KDP select one has to wait for it to complete its course then remove it.

Once these demands are met Amazon does not take long to release the book title to IngramSpark. Your book continues to be listed on Amazon since IngramSpark has them as one of their expanded distribution. I did transfer both paperback and e-book to IngramSpark. IngramSpark has a wider expanded distribution however I have not seen any advantage in terms of book sales.

Apart from sales, I get my book printed at a cheaper price from that of Amazon. The quality of prints from IngramSpark is far much better than the Amazon prints and the delivery is very fast. I also save from the shipping prices and shorter time of delivery. It took one full month for Amazon to send the books from USA to Australia. This waiting period can be frustrating particularly if customers are involved.

I am happy with IngramSpark in terms of my paperback quality, due to this experience, when I publish my next book, I will leave the e-book with Amazon and publish the paperback with Ingramspark. I am still on the learning journey.

ISBN NUMBER, EDITING AND PUBLISHING EXPLAINED

As new author in this world of self-publishing there seems to be a lot of confusion between ISBN, Editing and publishing. I have encountered a lot of people with the same issue hence I decided to discuss about it and provide a bit of an idea between the difference on the three terminologies and this will make it easier for new authors entering this field.

ISBN

ISBN: This acronym stands for International Standard Book Number. It is a unique number which is allocated to identify books and used by publishers, libraries, online book sellers and other supply chains. It is not mandatory to have the number however most booksellers might shun those books without this identifier particularly when in form of paperback. This unique number used to be ten digits (10) until Dec 2006. Starting 2007 the digits increased to thirteen (13). These numbers are divided with hyphens between them.

An example of ISBN: 978-0-6488978-0-4

ISBN does not carry any form of legal or copy right protection. Depending on some countries ISBN has been made a legal entity to identify book publications.

It is the responsibility of the author (self-publishing) to attain their own ISBN for their books, however some publishers offer this number for free. While it is good to gain something for free there is always a catch to it. Publishers who provide free ISBN limit the author to use their book title in any other platforms. The author also gives away their rights to publishing organisations if they gain free ISBN. Individual countries are responsible for issuing ISBN.

EDITING

Editing is the ability to review written information before it is published. It is a process used to make changes, correct and improve written work and make it better in presentation, use of words and flow. When authors finish writing their first manuscript, they go through their own written work many times to ensure that the story is interesting, clear and precise.

Writers also rectify any misspelling of words and adjust areas they need to rectify. This is the first editing of the manuscript. After this initial thorough editing, then the author approaches a professional editor who is good at providing honest feedback of the manuscript.

The editor might suggest some changes to help improve the manuscript. If both parties accept to the adjustments the author then makes a decision whether to publish their work. However interior designing of the book and cover are the next steps before publishing.

PUBLISHING

Publishing is presenting own work to the public through an organisation where everybody is able to view, read and gauge the book. It is at this stage where authors self-publish their work with different organisations such as amazon, Ingramspark among others. Organisation like Amazon does not charge any fee to upload and publish own book with them.

However, Ingramspark charge USD 49 dollars for paperback and every other time one makes an adjustment to the title they charge 25 dollars. The ebook cost 25 dollars and if publishing both at the same time it is a bit cheaper as it cost 49 dollars. I found that while Ingramspark has a wider distribution, adjusting and rectifying your title content can be costly. Every time an adjustment is done one has to pay 25 dollars and it can all add up to a lot of money.
